What Is Bacon and How Come It Is Popular?
On November 30, 2009 in Food
Bacon is considered to be one of the tastiest foods in Western culture. There are plenty websites devoted to this topic. There are even fan clubs. Surprisingly, there are actually Bacon shoes (these are not really made out of Bacon but are rather designed to look as if they have been - do a query if you do not believe me).
This, perhaps unexpected popularity, makes me intrigued. Who invented bacon? How to cook bacon? Can you microwave bacon? How to make bacon? Can we do this ourselves? Which are the best bacon recipes? Is Bacon Healthy? Why do people love it so much?
Fortunately, the internet is a great place to search for resources for such information. A quick search reveals that Bacon is simply cured meat that is made from certain parts of a pig. There are several types of bacon which come from different parts of the pig (its belly, its side, its loins, its shoulder and even its cheeks). In addition, there are countless methods of making it: it can be smoked, boiled, fried, baked, grilled, used as a component in a salad and in many additional methods. And certainly,, bacon can most definitely be microwaved (i.e. using a microwave bacon cooker), and this is a thing people can do on their own.
As Bacon is made from pigs (though in certain countries, non-pork based bacon-like foods are also called bacon, which is in my humble opinion plainly does not count), is actually forbidden to eat for followers of Judaism and Islam. Judaism considers pigs as ‘dirty’ or ‘tainted’ animals and as such, all meats prepared from them are forbidden.
I need to finish, my Spicy Bacon Pasta is waiting for me. I suggest you leave now and purchase some. You know you want to.
